Groupe de recherche en aménagement et design

GRAD is a design research lab at the University of Montreal, Canada’s top-ranked comprehensive French-speaking university. GRAD’s research activities focus on human-centered and collaborative practices, studying the potential of collaboration and transdisciplinarity as means to creativity and innovation. The analytical problem-centered approach to designing allows GRAD’s researchers, design students and collaborators not only to explore a variety of strategies for identifying needs and design opportunities, but also envision creative ways of addressing them. Put into practice, these approaches help guide the creative process and the development of context-sensitive solutions through pertinent design proposals that are useful, meaningful, and justifiable at the same time. Funded by government and public institutions and industrial partners, GRAD’s research investigates a problem field by studying local and socio-cultural phenomena, people’s perception and experience of the material world, and how information technologies impact society and lifestyle. Design experts in the field of product design, user interfaces design, urban furniture / equipment design, and interior architecture / space design join their efforts in developing new methods and tools and testing their relevance through actual design projects. GRAD’s research contributes to the discussions on designers’ strategic role in society, design thinking, design processes, and design education.
